When you have your own business, especially a sunless tan business, your clients are the “meat and potatoes” of that business. Therefore, you want to make your clients as happy as possible so that they will come back for more.

There are quite a few variables that affect the quality of a sunless tan. Two people can receive the exact same treatment, no matter what kind it is, and get extremely different results. The following describes the 7 major factors that you need to be aware of.

1)	Skin type: Skin type is very important when it comes to sunless tanning. Colors react differently on different skin so it is highly crucial that you stock a variety of colors for your clients.

As an example, what may look like a deep, dark color on one person may show up on another as a golden hue. In addition, doing a spot test, especially for those who have never had one before, is critical for the perfect end result.

2)	Pre-Application Care: Make sure that your clients know that they need to do their part before the sunless tanning session. Let your customers know that they need to exfoliate everywhere prior to a treatment.

Assure them that if they don’t comply, their tan will fade faster and spotting or splotching may result. In addition, you must have on hand a good quality barrier cream for their hands and feet because these areas generally hold more color.

3)	Post-Application Care: Let your clients know that for at least the first 6 hours following treatment that they avoid any activity that could hinder a proper sunless tan result. This includes physical activity that produces sweat, swimming, moisturizing and bathing.

In addition, your clients will need to moisturize daily, especially after taking a shower, to prolong the life of the tan.

4)	Spray Equipment and its Maintenance: You need to remember that application styles for different people can vary so a one size fits all style may not fit everyone. In addition, a spray application’s quality may be compromised if you don’t clean or maintain your equipment regularly.

5)	Your Skill Level: Applying any product for sunless tanning takes practice. It is imperative that you become as fluent as possible in the application process because skill affects the end results.

Therefore, the more experience you have the better. You can practice on yourself and your friends first before you go start with your clients.

6)	The Quality of the Sunless Solution: No matter if you use spray, lotion, creams, foams, etc. on your clients, the quality of the solution is important for the proper results. Therefore, it would be a good idea to have a varying range of products.

7)	Maintaining the Tan: Another piece of added advice is to have a varying array of maintenance products on hand for prolonging their tan.

Your sunless tan business is completely reliant upon your customers. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep a variety of customer focused ideas in mind when purchasing, applying and maintaining your product line as well as maintaining equipment and the skill level involved in your business.

This article discusses organic tanners and spray tanning:

Now, with our modern techniques, tans can be obtained all year long. Dermatologist and the Cancer Society are on a widespread campaign to inform the public about the dangers of long-term tanning in the sun or tanning in a tanning bed.

The alternative has been self-tanning solutions and now, spray tanning at your local tanning salon or spa is available in many different forms.

Spray tanning is a great way to provide yourself with a tan without the harmful ultraviolet rays that can cause skin damage, dryness and even cancer. The natural skin care companies have come out with their own sunless tanning products.

These have progressed over the years by experimentation with different dyes, etc. The earlier products were known to come off of the skin onto the clothing. They have created organic based sprays which will not rub off.

Sunless tanning products contain the active ingredient, DHA or dihydroxyacetone. Some are produced synthetically while organic tanners usually derive their DHA from vegetable sources. The DHA when applied in the form of a cream, lotion or even spray combines with our epidermis or outer skin layer cells and it will temporarily darken the skin, thus creating the appearance of a tan.

As in any tan, our dead skin cells with the tanned skin gradually shed from the surface and the tan disappears. Some natural skin care companies use organic soy extracts with sugar which gives a very natural tanned appearance and tone to the skin. Along with these extracts are added jojoba oil or possibly aloe vera which provide the tanners with a moisturizing effect.

Lavera Sunless self-tanning lotion is an extremely popular organic tanner, and is made from soy extracts and also utilize sugar with their product to provide a natural tan to the skin. Their product combined with aloe vera, rose oil make it a beautiful natural self tanner with a moisturizing effect to the lotion.

Spray Tanning:

Spray tanning has become a new version of safe tanning. The standard type of spray tanning usually contains dyes, alcohol with innumerable chemicals. You do not have to be stuck with this type and can also go organic if you prefer. Many prefer the organic spray tanning due to the lack of chemicals in the spray tanner.

The original spray tanners had an odor that was very chemical in origin. They were definitely an alternative way to get a safe tan, but you did not have the aroma of safety. That made people wonder if it was good to apply to the skin.

There really is no difference in the cost and many prefer the organic and feel it would be worth it, even if it did have a higher price tag.

Many of the organic spray tanners contain mineral salts. This provides the bronzing effect. The time spent is approximately 15 minutes and the tan darkens over approximately a ten hour period.

When searching to find the most effective self tanning products it is important to find one that lists dihydroxyacetone or DHA as an active ingredient. DHA is an isomer of glyceraldehydes, and is used to darken the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology, states that DHA should begin to work around 40 minutes to an hour after application.

DHA is a sugar that is dull in color, and is important to the metabolism of carbohydrates. It works by interacting with dead cells located in the outermost layer of the epidermis. In a manner of speaking, DHA reacts to the amino acids in the epidermis and produces a natural pigment called melanoidin, which bonds with the various proteins in skin cells. This bonding results in a change on skin color that lasts for about a week.

It is also important to note that melanoidin and melanin work together in absorbing harmful rays from the sun. Most self tanners only provide a protection of SPF 2, give or take, which is not high enough to offer any protection from the suns rays. It is also a good idea to wear protective eye wear and sunblock if you plan on being in the sun for a long period of time. Another important note is that many sunless tanning products available on the market today are designed to provide the user with a natural looking tan.

In about three hours from the initial application, the sunless tanner will dry and give you a tan that lasts all week. A week is just a general time line for how long a sunless tan should last, but it all depends on your skin and what part of the body has the product on it. Some parts of the body will have a different color and the tan may last longer, or not last as long as other parts.

So, where does the tan go?

Dead skin cells rub off when showering and doing other activities, and is usually the cause of a fading tan. The human skin, in fact, rejuvenates itself approximately every month. Many companies state, that in order to maintain a tanned look, it is recommended to reapply the product every three to four days. Some products may last longer, but this factor depends on the brand being used. Experimenting with sunless tanners is good, so you can find the one that fits you and your body the best.

Maybe you already use sunless tanning lotion and you like the effects but think that they could probably be enhanced a little bit. Or perhaps you’re just starting out with considering the use of lotion and you want to make sure that you do it right if you decide to use it. Either way, you can benefit from a few sunless tanning tips. These tips are designed to make the process of tanning with these kinds of products go more smoothly as well as to make the effects more desirable.

Here are some sunless tanning lotion tips that you may want to follow:

1.	Figure out in advance if you’re going to need assistance. There are areas of your body that you can’t reach and can’t see correctly. You don’t want to poorly apply lotion to places like your back and then find out once you’re in public that it doesn’t look right. If you’re going to be doing this on your own, make sure that you have a lot of mirrors and that you have tools for accessing hard-to-reach areas. Paint brushes and mini paint rollers are commonly used tools for applying sunless tanning lotion. Otherwise, consider sunless tanning as a time when you get together with a best friend. You tan her back, she’ll tan yours.

2.	Treat your legs well before using the products. This means that you should be regularly moisturizing your legs using a product designed for sensitive skin. (Hopefully you already do this, but if you don’t, now’s your chance to start indulging.) You should also make sure that you don’t do any shaving or waxing in the hours before the lotion is applied. The product is safe but skin can always get irritated if you’re overwhelming it with a variety of beauty treatments.

3.	Exfoliate! This falls in somewhat the same category as the first tip but deserves its own spotlight because of how crucial it is to the sunless tanning results. To get an even and natural-looking tan, you need to apply the product to the freshest skin possible. This means that you should get into the shower ahead of time and scrub those legs. But be gentle. Exfoliating is not the same as rubbing your skin raw. You should use a soft wash towel and a quality exfoliator and take time with the exfoliation process.

4.	Watch your hands. Although sunless lotion doesn’t normally leave that orange tint on your skin anymore, it can leave it on your hands if you’re applying the lotion without gloves. If you can’t stand the feel of gloves, wash your hands often throughout the process to prevent this problem.

5.	Find a sunless tanning outfit. Yes, this sounds silly. So why do it? Because you’re going to want to make sure that you’re applying the sunless tanning lotion to the same spots every time you use it. Different outfits leave different areas of the body bare. Of course, you could just go au natural if you’re doing an all-over tan with the sunless tanning lotion.

Sunless tanning lotion is easy to use. However, you might want to solicit the assistance of a trusted friend to make it all go more smoothly. Treat your body right and take the time to do the tanning in a professional manner and you’ll come out looking like it was done at a professional salon.

There are many advantages when it comes to safe sunless tanning technology. These days, individuals are more health conscious than ever. What was once considered to be a trend is now viewed as a potential health hazard. This trend that I am referring to is that of the standard tanning beds that we see in tanning salons, homes, and gyms all around the world. More and more individuals have come forth over the years stating the complications that they experienced as a result of using these tanning beds.

This is why a group of individuals consisting of doctors, scientists, and more joined forces to create a safe system that can be used to achieve a gorgeous tan, without all the health issues coming up. Here, you will be introduced to the concept of safe sunless technology, and the advantages of putting it to work for you!

Recent studies have indicated two major problems with the standard tanning systems: the "microwave" technology and the type of lighting used to turn the skin different shades of color. In order to create a system that was safe, and effective, the technology would have to totally change from the basic "tan from the inside out technology", and the lighting would have to have benefits to the health, not pose dangers. This is how safe sunless technology was created.

Today’s sunless technology implements the use of lighting that is actually considered to be healthy for the individual that is exposed to it! That is quite a change from the traditional, intrusive lighting that has been used in the past!

When using the sunless tanning technology that is considered to be safe, you will benefit from receiving the right amount of vitamin D, as well as UVB rays and UVA rays that are actually considered to be the healthy aspects of the sun, without the other dangers of the sun – like overexposure.

Most of the lamps that you will find in these systems are those that are known to use what is called "ESB Energy". These types of lights provide a standard coating of protection that delivers just the right amount of light for a safe and effective tan, without causing health problems. In addition to this, the vitamin D that is provided enhances the health overall.

Now, you can get the deep, golden tan that you always desired without having to worry about the dangers that were once associated with artificial tanning. Safe sunless tanning technology allows individuals many options when it comes to the materials needed to acquire the tan. There are special tanning salons that carry safe systems, and home systems can also be purchased that can provide an individual with the privacy, comfort, and safety that they require in tanning.

How long do you think that sunless tanning lotion has been on the market? Come on, take a guess. Many people think that sunless tanning lotion first hit the market in the late 1980′s. But this is only because a new version of the product came out at this time, drawing attention with an extensive marketing campaign. Sunless lotions were actually first developed twenty years before that. And although they weren’t always used as prevalently as they are today, they have been a part of the tanning industry since that time.

The first sunless tanning lotion to be sold to consumers was released in the 1960′s. It was a simple product which was intended to be applied, left on overnight and then washed away. The result was, of course, supposed to be a naturally beautiful and even tan. Unfortunately, as with many new products that are just being tested out, this product didn’t quite do what it was supposed to do. Remember the old fears that sunless tanning lotion would turn your skin an orange color? Those fears date back to the fact that this was reality back in these days. You can see why it didn’t get a good enough name back then to spread through the consumer industry.

If you guessed that these products were first created in the 1980′s, you weren’t entirely wrong. That’s because the new version of these products, a version using better ingredients and achieving better results, was finally developed and brought to consumers at this time. Something else also happened at this time which you might be well aware of as someone who enjoys indoor tanning. That was the first budding fears that indoor tanning (and also natural outdoor tanning) could have harmful effects on the health. Since no one knew quite what the deal was with these rumors at the time, consumers began actively looking for alternatives to indoor tanning. Sunless tanning lotion became one of those options.

Supply & Demand go hand-in-hand so it was at this time that a number of the major manufacturers of sunless tanning lotion began to crop up. Their products hit the shelves of local beauty shops and cosmetics stores. The competition in the industry helped to drive the price of the lotion down, making it more affordable to the average person. This allowed even more consumers to explore use of the product. Many of the products that are on the market today are similar to those being released back in the 1980′s.

Of course, there have been some developments in sunless lotion since that time. Tricks have been learned to make sunless tanning lotion work better for all people, including using it in conjunction with other tanning lotions and with exfoliation and moisturizing techniques. Furthermore, developments have been made to allow sunless tanning lotion to work for a broader range of different skin tones. But the basics of the product remain the same. You put it on, wait for it to develop and come out with that even tan that you were looking for.

Sunless tanning lotions are a great invention. They allow you to easily get a beautiful tan without exposing yourself to UV rays. However, when they aren’t applied properly, sunless tanning lotions can look uneven and unnatural. Here are the steps that you need to take to appropriately apply sunless tanning lotion.

1.	Do your prep work. Sure, you can just slap on the sunless tanning lotions and let them do their job but you aren’t going to get nearly as good of a tan that was as you will if you prepare your skin. This means that you should be moisturizing your skin on a regular basis in the days leading up to the sunless tanning lotion application. You should avoid shaving or waxing your legs in the hours before the application. And you should exfoliate so that you’re applying sunless tanning lotion to the freshest skin possible.

2.	Dress for the job. You should always wear the same outfit when applying sunless tanning lotions. This is because different outfits will leave different patches of skin exposed, giving you an uneven tan. Better yet, don’t wear anything and tan all over.

3.	Start from your toes, work your way up. You want to take your time and make sure that you’re applying the sunless tanning lotion to every area evenly. When you get to your back, use a brush or even a miniature paint roller so that you reach all areas. Hopefully you have a double-mirror so you can see yourself work. In a pinch, ask a friend or family member to make sure that it looks right.

4.	Use the right amount. You don’t want to use too little sunless tanning lotion because the effects won’t be too good. You don’t want to use too much because then you risk an uneven tan. Use just a little bit more lotion than you would use if you were applying your daily moisturizing lotion.

5.	Look in the mirror. Once all of the sunless tanning lotion has been applied, you’ll want to take a good hard look in your mirror. Make sure it’s even. Make sure you didn’t miss any spots. Make sure that you’ve washed the excess lotion off of your hands. Make sure that you don’t have any on your hair. This is the time to be paying close attention to the work that you’ve just done.

6.	Relax. You need to let sunless tanning lotions dry before you go do anything else. You don’t want to get dressed too quickly or the lotion will transfer on to your clothes, making a mess and ruining your tan. Consider this period to be a time of indulgence. Get out a glass of wine, a favorite book or some good music and just sit there and do nothing while your lotion dries.

Following these sunless tanning lotion application tips, you should be able to get an even tan that no one will know didn’t come from the sun rays.

Most people who benefit from the use of sunless tanning lotions don’t ever stop to think about how they work. After all, they’re just glad that they work, providing natural-looking tans without requiring them to go out into the sun. But perhaps you’ve mused upon the fact that sunless lotions are a really interesting product. And perhaps you’ve wondered how they do what they do. Do they dye the skin? Are they safe? These are the questions that a few people have wanted to know about sunless tanning lotions.

The answer that these people is looking for is simple. DHA. Okay, maybe it’s not that simple, but once you know a little bit about it, the sunless tanning lotion process is easy to understand. Basically, the important ingredient in any sunless tanning lotion that you might use is an ingredient called DHA, short for dihydroxyacetone. This is a natural ingredient (a carbohydrate actually, see there is such a thing as good carbs!). Believe it or not, it’s basically a sugar.

Way back in the 1920′s, DHA was being used for medical purposes and it was discovered that it turned the skin a darker color than it naturally was. It was then that the idea was sparked that would eventually lead to the creation of sunless tanning lotions. But original plans were derailed and the first sunless tanning lotions (which didn’t come out until forty years after that discovery) didn’t make good use of DHA. It wasn’t until the 1970′s that the FDA approved the use of DHA for cosmetics and it wasn’t until the 1980′s that it became the primary ingredient in sunless tanning lotions.

Okay, so now you know the history of how DHA came to be an important part of sunless tanning lotions but how does it work? Basically, this sugar forms a natural reaction with your skin cells that results in the changing of skin color. Varying amounts of DHA within the sunless tanning lotions will produce varying shades of color because higher concentrations of DHA will have a greater reaction with the skin and create a darker coloring. Because the DHA is only reacting with the outer layers of the skin, the sunless tanning lotion is designed to have a temporary effect. Hence the maintenance that you do to keep the tan looking fresh.
So, in a sense, yes – DHA does dye the skin although it does so through a natural chemical reaction. Is that safe? DHA has now been on the FDA’s list of approved cosmetics products for over 30 years. The worst thing that your skin is likely to experience as a result of the reaction is a mild tingling or slight irritation. Other than that, the product is considered to be safe. People who have lingering concerns about the effects of UV rays from natural outdoor tanning and indoor salon tanning often find that the use of sunless tanning lotions is a preferable alternative to getting the tan that they desire.

When applied correctly, sunless tanning products will give your skin a beautiful, healthy glow. Your body will look like you just came back from the beach, but your skin will be healthy and without damage from the sun’s rays. There are several recommended guidelines when applying sunless tanning products. To achieve a flawless, streak-free tan, be sure to read through all the suggestions before starting the sunless tanning application process. The application process is easy and just requires a small amount of preparation.

Preparing your skin is the first step to becoming bronze. In preparation, use a body scrub to exfoliate your skin. Pay special attention to extra dry areas such as elbows and knees. It is best to exfoliate the day before you apply the sunless tanning lotion. You can also exfoliate the same day. It is important to be sure all the scrub is washed off, and there is no oily residue left on the skin from any other soaps or lotions. Residues may interfere with the sunless tanning lotion and leave streaks or patches. Also, if you have sensitive skin you may want to avoid shaving your legs just prior to applying the lotion.

To protect your hands from staining, always wear gloves. The active ingredient in the sunless tanning lotion will stain your hands if you do not use gloves. Using gloves will keep the palms of your hands stain free. A snug fitting disposable glove works best. You may have difficulty applying your tan evenly if your gloves do not fit well. Another suggestion is to try using an applicator sponge for those hard to reach areas. If you decide not to use gloves, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after application.

Apply your tanning lotion in sections to make the application process easier. Start at one end of the body and work your way over the entire body. For example, start at the legs and work your way up the body. Applying your sunless tanning lotion in small sections will help you avoid streaking and help avoid missing any areas.

You will not need a huge amount of lotion for the sunless tan to work. The lotion may be used sparingly. Once you get started with the application process, you will have a better idea of how much lotion you need for each section. Before applying lotion to your skin, put a small amount in the palms of your hands and rub your hands together. You can always add more lotion if needed, but extra lotion left on the skin can leave streaks or dark splotchy areas. It is best to spread the tanning lotion on the skin and let it thoroughly dry. Apply the lotion quickly but thoroughly, and spread in a circular motion.

If you are unable to have someone assist you with your backside, you may use a sponge on a stick to cover the hard to reach places. Apply the lotion to the backs of your hands last. Be sure to wash off any residue left behind from the gloves. Avoid your palms and the bottoms of your feet. When tanning the face, it is recommended to use a sunless tanning lotion made especially for the face. These products are gentler alternatives to sunless lotions for the body.

Use a damp towel or sponge to wipe off any excess lotion from your skin. Also, use a damp towel to wipe off areas of the skin that do not normally achieve a dark tan naturally. These areas include the soles of the feet, the underside of the wrists, the under arm area, the palms of the hands, ankles, etc. Be sure to wipe off any excess lotion from dry skin areas such as the knees and elbows. Doing this will help you achieve a dark, even, natural looking tan to the body.

It is best to wait until you skin is completely dry before getting dressed. This should take about fifteen minutes. Avoid tight garments and wear looser clothes for a few hours to let the lotion completely absorb into the skin and dry. Avoid any activities that make you sweat for one hour.

Reapply the sunless tanning lotion as needed to achieve your desired shade of tan. When applied several times over several days, your tan will darken. The typical sunless tan will last about 5 to 7 days before it begins to fade. Simply reapply the sunless lotion to maintain, or increase, your desired level of color.

Sunless tanning products can give your skin a beautiful, flawless tan when applied correctly. The application process is easy and only requires a small amount of preparation. You can have that sun-kissed healthy glow, without any damage from harmful sun rays. Have that summertime look any time of the year!

There are solutions to the problem of harmful UV sunlight that allow you to have all of the aesthetic benefits of a rich tan without the harmful side effects. The answer is in the types of tanning products you use to care for your skin while in the sun and after.

Pre-Tanning Preparation

It is always good to keep your skin moisturized. Cold weather and dry air can dry it out as well as salt water and chlorine. Always protect your skin with moisturizers day and night. They are most effective if applied immediately following a shower because the skin is moist and freshly exfoliated from washing.

Before going out in the sun, even in the winter, it is important to protect skin with a moisturizer that has a SPF protection factor of 15 or more. This rating is how many times more protected skin is than if it had nothing on it. It is so important to protect the face because it is more susceptible to sunburn.

Tanning Beds

Tanning beds are only slightly less harmful to the skin that the actual sun. However, there are tanning bed lotions meant especially for tanning beds that give a deeper tone to the skin and protect it at the same time. Artificial tanning bed light bulbs are extremely strong, and that is why you can tan in just a few minutes per session. This also prepares the skin to deepen in colour each time you go to the beach.

Many salons have tanning booths where you stand or beds where you lie down and get all areas of the body tan at once. This is a good place to go if you are planning to go on vacation to a warm weather climate in the middle of winter. You can enjoy all of your holiday without having to worry about sunburn, because you can condition your skin to the sun before you leave home.

Lotions & Creams and other Tanning Products.

It can be confusing knowing what type of lotion to use to best protect your skin and still give you great colour. There are spray on lotions, facial tanner products, a lotions with all kinds of number on them! Much of what you should use depends on your skin type.

If you are fair skinned then you need to choose a tanning product that protects the most. An SPF rating of at least 15, but 30 would be better. Those with darker, olive skin tones can use a lotion with an SPF of 8 and be adequately protected, provided they reapply the lotion frequently if there are going to be in the sun for long periods of time. There are also sunless tanning products that offer no protection from UV rays, but will change the skin colour without the sun.
